When is the 2018 Umoja: Black Graduation Celebration?
May 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. [location is still being determined]. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. Why isn't there a location yet? The celebration has grown so large of the last couple of years that we have outgrown CPA. We expect more than 200 students to register this year, which means we need a space that will accommodate an estimated 800 people comfortably. If I have a ceremony starting at 7 p.m. elsewhere, may I still participate? Yes, you will simply miss the processional. Ushers will direct you to your seat. Can I register after April 1, 2018? NO. We will not be able to accept your registration after that date. How do I contact the Umoja Planning Committee with any questions? You can contact us via email at: [email protected] or go to the CONTACT page. Please allow 48-72 hours for a response. Will stoles be available at the event for purchase? No. You can order a stole online through Amazon OR a private vendor of your choice. Reason: Stoles are order 8 weeks before the event based on registration. If I register for the celebration, I am unable to attend, will I still be able to pick up a free stole? No. Stoles are for students who are able to participate in the program. Is this event open to all ISU students or just Black students? This event is open to ALL ISU STUDENTS regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, or marital status. In fact, we welcome everyone to participate in this event. Can students graduating in the summer and December participate? Yes. They are welcome to participate in the celebration. How many guests can I bring? At this time, we hope to secure a larger venue which seats 900 people. We will keep you informed of the location should we need to give out tickets for this event. What time do I need to be there? All graduates need arrive no later than 6:30pm. All guests need to arrive no later than 6:45 pm. What do I wear? We would prefer that you wear all black which means black tops, bottoms, and black shoes. Dress professionally. Please be aware that some guests will be seated close to the stage. Will there be food? We will have cake and punch for the reception afterward. Is the event free for students? YES!!!!! Thanks to generous contributions from our Community Partners and individual contributions from faculty and staff, this event is free. Can I dance across the stage? Yes!!! But please keep it PG (no twerking), but you can Nae Nae. But make it quick (10 seconds or less) |
